Why Does My Computer Seem to Freeze?

Duck Smashing Computer with HammerComputer freezes are simply a state when your computer ceases to accept, or at least appear to accept, any input data from you via the keyboard or mouse. The screen output also seems to be frozen and not changing or updating as it should. Your computer is frozen. What the heck causes this to happen? Sometimes it clears up in a few seconds, sometimes it seems to never clear up until you reboot the machine.

Generally freezing is the result of the Windows Operating System having some sort of 'exception' thrown and it is struggling to determine the next process to run as some current process has thrown things 'for a loop'. There could also be some kind of load issue going on - that is to say the computer is being tasked with more to do that it has resources to manage in an efficient manner. It could be that a driver got out of whack, a resource has become corrupted, or a third party application is performing functions your version of Windows just doesn't like and things are about to go south. Yes, unfortunately it could be any one of several possible issues, or a combination of issues causing computer freezes which is even more fun to diagnose!

You can't of course rule out possible hardware problems contributing to the locking up. If the internal temperature, for example, gets higher than the vendor recommended maximum temperature, internal components can start to break down and cause an entire host of issues. Faulty RAM modules, aging hard drives, outdated Motherboard ROM BIOS or firmware, or some third party application that is just not optimized for your version of Windows.(Please refer to Terminology or PC Maintenance on the left as needed).
